Replacement Windows in Rapid City

West River winters are long and windy, and summers can swing hot. Windows are where much of that weather gets in. Here is what Rapid City homeowners should know before replacing them, and a simple way to get an estimate.

Rapid City’s Housing Stock

Rapid City’s median home was built in 1979, and about 53% of homes date from before 1980 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). Many of those homes still have original aluminum sliders, early vinyl, or wood sashes that have been painted shut. Signs a window is ready to go:

What to Decide

Glass

Double or triple pane, and ratings that meet Northern-zone ENERGY STAR.

Frame

Vinyl, fiberglass, wood or composite. Compare them.

Style

Sliders, double-hung, or casements, which seal tightly and help with egress.

Permits

Often none for a same-size swap, with important exceptions. Details.

Insert or Full-Frame?

An insert fits inside the old frame. It is faster and less disruptive, but it loses a little glass area. A full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening. It costs more but lets the installer fix rot, add insulation around the frame, and change sizes. In older Rapid City homes with drafty frames, ask each installer which method they recommend and why.

Older Homes and Lead Paint

If your house was built before 1978, painted window trim may contain lead. The EPA’s RRP program requires paid contractors who disturb that paint in pre-1978 homes to be certified firms using lead-safe practices. Ask for the certification.

How It Works

  1. Fill out the short form.
  2. An independent window company contacts you to measure.
  3. You get a written quote that lists window brand and series, glass ratings, method and trim.
  4. The installer orders the windows and schedules the install.

Areas

Rapid City, Rapid Valley, Box Elder and Spearfish. Sturgis, Black Hawk and Hill City may be covered depending on the installer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does window replacement cost in Rapid City?

homeyou lists $362–$487 per window for Rapid City, and HomeGuide’s national figure is $4,500–$22,500 for 10–15 windows (both checked Nov 4, 2026). Frame material, size and style change the price.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Rapid City?

Rapid City’s code exempts window replacement on one- and two-family homes from a building permit, except in historic districts or on National Register properties. Changing the size of the opening needs a permit. Confirm with the city before starting.

What ENERGY STAR rating do I need?

All of South Dakota is in ENERGY STAR’s Northern zone. Under Version 7 that means a U-factor of 0.22 or lower, or one of the allowed trade-offs with higher solar heat gain.

Are you a window company?
